Defragment windows

I faced a problem with windows XP. It scanned my 'F' drive every time I start windows. I tried to run defragmenter and defragment the drive from the start menu. But it showed some warning that it is scheduled for some scan and degragmentation can not be done.
I managed for force defragment the drive through command prompt. If you want to defragment a drive you can try this method.

Start → Command → defrag X: (here X= desired drive)

If you want to analyze of force defragment, write “defrag /?” and hit enter. Then follow the instructions.

  1. Well, before defragmentation , you should make some preparation for it.

    1. You should clean up the junk files and information.

Since your system work for a long time, the junk files may cram many unconscious operations may result in junk files. They are temporary files when installing the programs, cache files after browsing, DLL files left by deleting software and error files produced by shutting down the computer forcedly.

It is common that most users are inclined to use the disk cleaning up programs in the Windows, at the same time, you can also turn to certain more powerful defragmenter to help you.

    2. You should check and restore any mistake in the hard disk.

Of course, you can have a try of the Disk Scan Program of Windows firstly. Although it really takes a lot of time to repair it, as long as you are patient enough, the most errors and mistakes can be restored after complete and detailed scanning.

  2. I always run a diskcleanup and chkdsk bfopre defrag. Also there are great alternatives to the windows program. Some latest advanced defraggers are automatic, defrag under low free space and even prevent fragmentation to a large extent making defrag easy.

  4. @ Jeanne

Thanks for your advice. I actually tried that but somehow it was not useful. I don't know whether it was a virus or a bug, but it only worked this way.
