The canon cartridges are now built with a chip that determines whether the tank is full or empty. So, once the tank is empty, it will still show "Empty" after refilling it. This can be avoided following some methods (which varies according to the printer). I found the following methods in a website (I don't remember the address; It was copied in my hard drive) to avoid "Empty" notice after refilling the cartridge. Mine is Canon 1800 and the second method worked for me. For canon 1800 follow the second method.
First method:
Applicable to following Models-
BJC series: bjc3000,bjc8200,etc

Mounting windows drive to Ubuntu
After installing Ubuntu first thing that one would face is to mount windows drive (if dual booting)
This is applicable for
Permanently mount windows drives (temporary mounting causes dysfunction after a certain time)
You'll have to have NTFS config installed to mount permanantly
For that go to Application -> Add/remove programes; search for NTFS config and install it.
Then run it from Application -> System tolls
Select the drives you want to mount
Then select Write support for both interna and external
That should do the trick.

epub reading and converting
There are a lot of softwares to read and create epub books. I have tried some of them which were free. But for creating and reading epub books I felt comfortable with only a few of them.
For reading epub books in desktop, I found “Adobe digital edition” most convenient. You can create library and manage your epub books with it. But unfortunately it can not create epub format.
For epub creation there is another great software. That is “Calibre”. It is free also. You can easily download and install the software. I have converted some pdfs to epub and the output is good.
For reading epub format in my windows mobile the best free software I have tried is “Zulureader”.
Now come to Ubuntu. Go to Add/Remove option of applications and search for E-book reader. Select it and follow the instructions.
After installation the software can be run from
Application -> Office -> E-Book reader
That should do

Lock keyboard and mouse for free
There are few softwares available to lock keyboard and mouse. The most appropriate software I found to lock keyboard and mouse is "Lock Keyboard software". It is free and very much useful to lock keyboard and mouse
to prevent children to click or make unwonted works. Although it lock keyboard and mouse, scrolling remains active and useful to study. Here how you can get it.
Download the Lock keyboard software from
http://www.brothersoft.com/keyboard-lock-204865.html
Unzip it and run the file. Select a password and click start. Typing the password should lock the keyboard and mouse.

Modifying/ uninstalling GRUB
I got it from another site but don't remember the address anymore.
A) Using a DOS or Windows 9x/ME Boot Floppy
In case you have DOS or Windows 9x/ME on your system, you can use
fdisk for this purpose. Create a rescue disk in DOS or Windows 9x/ME,
use it to boot the computer, and execute fdisk as follows:
fdisk /mbr
The MBR will be rewritten and GRUB will be uninstalled.
B) Using Windows XP
In Windows XP, you can uninstall GRUB as follows:
Boot from the Windows XP CD and press the "R" key during the setup in
order to start the Recovery Console. Select your Windows XP
installation from the list and enter the administrator password. At
the input prompt, enter the command "FIXMBR" and confirm the query
with "y". The MBR will be rewritten and GRUB will be uninstalled.
Press "exit" to reboot the computer.
C) Using Windows 2000
In Windows 2000, you can uninstall GRUB as follows:
Boot from the Windows 2000 CD and press the "R" key during the setup
and then the "K" key in the following menu in order to start the
Recovery Console. Select your Windows 2000 installation from the list
and enter the administrator password. At the input prompt, enter the
command "FIXMBR" and confirm the query with "y". The MBR will be
rewritten and GRUB will be uninstalled. Press "exit" to reboot the
computer.
E) Using Freedos
If none of the above-mentioned boot media is available, a floppy or CD
image from a free DOS system can be downloaded from
http://freedos.org/freedos/files/. You can create the CD image with
any burning program on any operating system. Just make sure not to
create a data CD but a CD image.
Creating the floppy image with Linux:
Enter the following command (or equivalent) in a root shell:
dd if=/tmp/fdos1440.img of=/dev/fd0
Creating the floppy image with Windows:
The directory /dosutils/rawrite/ on the first CD/DVD includes the
program rawrite.exe that can be used to write the image to a floppy.
Copy this program to the directory containing the file fdos1440.img.
Insert a floppy in the drive and start rawrite.exe. Enter the file
fdos1440.img as the source file and confirm with Enter. Then enter the
name of the floppy drive (usually "A") as the write medium. The image
will be written to the floppy.
Boot from this CD/floppy and select "1" for "Boot FreeDOS Setup" first
and then "3 - Clean Boot" from the start menu. Start fdisk with:
fdisk /mbr
By doing this, the boot loader GRUB will be overwritten.

Printing at miltiple pages (Tile printing)
I was in a need to print a large size photo. But my printer would not allow poster printing. The solution I found was tile printing. Tile printing is a printing process by which the original picture is divided into parts according to your printer's ability (letter, A4 etc. page) and printed. Then You'll have to join the printed pictures to get big photos. You can do tile printing by a free software named "Rasterbator". You have to download the software for tile printing (one can use it online also for tile printing).
Go to
http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/
You can download the software and install it or you can use the online gadget to get it done. Online version will allow only up to 1 MB size.
After running/ uploading file follow the instructions and you should be getting the PDF file with which you should be done.
Tips:
1. Select dot size small for small size printouts (say - two to three) and large for larger print outs.
2. Select the multicolor mood after selecting the dot size. Otherwise you'll get a black and white output as the default is black.

Using download manager in Ubuntu
Using download manager in Ubuntu is not straight forward. A few works needed before using download manager in Ubuntu specially with firefox. First of all you'll have to have flashgot plugin installed in firefox (remember, flashgot works as a communicator of the download manager with the browser, it has no ability to work as download manager itself).
For that you'll have to search for the addon and then add it.
Firefox will be restarted then.
Now install any of the download managers for ubuntu for using download manager in Ubuntu (Gwget, kget, wget, aria .....)
To install them go to terminal and write
sudo apt-get install xxx (where xxx = name of the download manager)
Some has recommended "wxDownload fast" as a good download manager available from "http://dfast.sourceforge.net/download.html". (I didn't give it a try but soon I'll)
From now on whenever you start download a file, there will be a new option - to save with fashgot. In the flashgot menu you'll get the option to download with the download manager.
If flashgot menu doesnot appear, try restarting the firefox.
Now you are ready for using download manager in Ubuntu.
